Get started
Quickstart: MCP
The Genesis MCP server gives an agent the OneOS services as tools: 331 of them, each taking the same input as the operation it calls. It runs locally over stdio with npx.
1. Create an API key
Console → API keys → Create. Give the key only the scopes the agent needs; for this guide, hives:read and hives:write. See Scopes.
2. Connect your client
claude mcp add genesis --env GENESIS_API_KEY=sk_... -- npx -y @lifesi/genesis-mcp@0.1.12{
"mcpServers": {
"genesis": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@lifesi/genesis-mcp@0.1.12"],
"env": { "GENESIS_API_KEY": "sk_..." }
}
}
}{
"mcpServers": {
"genesis": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@lifesi/genesis-mcp@0.1.12"],
"env": { "GENESIS_API_KEY": "sk_..." }
}
}
}For Claude Desktop, put the block in claude_desktop_config.json (Settings → Developer → Edit Config) and restart the app. The server needs Node.js 20.19 or later (tested on 20, 22 and 24).
3. Ask for something
Try: "Create a Hives project called quickstart, add a secret DATABASE_URL, list the project's secrets, then delete the project."
The agent calls hives_create_project, hives_create_secret, hives_list_secrets and hives_delete_project. Each tool carries MCP annotations (read-only, destructive, idempotent); hives_delete_project is marked destructive, so clients that confirm destructive tools ask before it runs.
Fewer tools in context
331 tool definitions are about 265 KB on each connect. With GENESIS_MCP_LAZY=1 (or --lazy) the server lists two tools instead, and every operation stays reachable:
genesis_search_toolsfinds operations by keyword and returns their ids and input schemas.genesis_callcalls any operation by id.
